Administrative detention
Administrative detention is imprisonment without charge or trial authorized by military orders, typically for renewable periods of up to six months.
Why it matters
It allows people to be held indefinitely based on secret evidence that neither the detainee nor their legal counsel is permitted to see.
Key context
Under international humanitarian law, administrative detention is permitted only in exceptional circumstances on an individual basis as a security measure, never as a form of collective punishment or long-term imprisonment without trial.
