History & geography
East Jerusalem
East Jerusalem is the part of Jerusalem occupied by Israel in 1967 and is treated by the United Nations as part of the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Why it matters
Its status is central to questions of sovereignty, Palestinian self-determination, settlements, residency and any future political settlement.
Key context
The United Nations supports a two-state solution based on the pre-1967 lines and does not recognize unilateral changes to those lines, including with regard to Jerusalem, other than those agreed by the parties.
