Self-determination
The right of self-determination is a fundamental principle of international law under which all peoples freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.
Why it matters
It is the recognized international legal framework confirming the Palestinian people's right to statehood, sovereignty and independence.
Key context
The International Court of Justice has repeatedly affirmed that the Palestinian people have an internationally recognized right to self-determination, and that this right is erga omnes (owed to the international community as a whole).
