Occupation & movement
Israeli settlements
Israeli settlements are civilian communities established by Israel in territory occupied since 1967, particularly in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
Why it matters
Settlements affect land, movement, territorial continuity and the prospects for Palestinian self-determination and a future Palestinian state.
Key context
In its 2024 advisory opinion, the International Court of Justice concluded that Israel's settlement policy and related practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory breach international law. The Court also stated that Israel must immediately cease all new settlement activity.
