Occupation & movement
Occupation
In this context, occupation refers to Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territory captured in 1967.
Why it matters
The occupation is central to questions involving military control, settlements, movement, land, Palestinian self-determination and the application of international humanitarian law.
Key context
The International Court of Justice describes the Occupied Palestinian Territory as the Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967, comprising the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip as a single territorial unit. In its advisory opinion of 19 July 2024, the ICJ concluded that Israel's continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is unlawful and must be brought to an end as rapidly as possible.
