Right of Return

The right of return refers to the principle that Palestinians displaced in 1948 and 1967,along with their descendants, have the right to return to their homes and property.

Why it matters

It is one of the foundational issues of the Palestinian national cause and a central permanent-status issue in international diplomacy.

Key context

In Resolution 194 (III) of 1948, the UN General Assembly resolved that refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbours should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date, and that compensation should be paid for the property of those choosing not to return.
