UNRWA
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East is a UN agency mandated to provide assistance and protection to registered Palestine refugees.
Why it matters
UNRWA provides education, healthcare, relief and social services, infrastructure and emergency assistance across Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.
Key context
Established by the UN General Assembly in 1949, UNRWA operates under a direct multilateral mandate. International bodies widely treat its operational capacity as irreplaceable for basic civilian survival in Gaza.
